Choice Saves Lives Campaign
You Have a Choice
There are many choices that are approved for colon cancer screening: Colonoscopy, Air Contrast Barium Enema, Stool for Occult Blood, Virtual Colonoscopy, Stool DNA, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy are all approved by various societies for screening.
However, NCCP and many other national organizations believe that among these choices there are 2 preferred choices.
We recommend a colonoscopy every 10 years for all average risk patients beginning at the age of 50. This option helps you to prevent ever getting colon cancer by removing small polyps before they ever become a cancer.
If you are not going to have a colonoscopy when it is time to have one, the 2nd best choice is to have a stool FIT every year. This test is a new type of FOBT (Fecal Occult Blood Test) that can be done in the privacy of your own home. This new test only detects a component of human blood and therefore is more accurate than tests previously used (Guaiac test). Because it only detects human blood, you no longer have to restrict your diet as it won’t be affected by red meat, or other foods and vitamins.
The FIT will detect up to 85% of all colon cancers, often at an early stage where they are curable.
Choosing either a colonoscopy every 10 years, or a FIT every year can save your life.
Remember you have a choice. Doing nothing is the wrong choice.
